The San Francisco 49ers traded their best rusher from 2024, Jordan Mason, to the Vikings. But 49ers fans aren’t happy because Mason played well last season.
The 49ers traded Jordan Mason to the Vikings on March 15, 2025, getting a 2026 sixth-round pick and swapping Day 3 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Mason, who was a restricted free agent, signed a two-year, $7 million guaranteed deal with the Vikings.
The 25-year-old wasn’t drafted out of Georgia Tech, but he became a fan favorite in 2024 when he filled in for an injured Christian McCaffrey. He ran for 789 yards and three touchdowns in just 12 games, impressing fans with his tough running style and ability to gain yards after contact.
Many thought he could be a long-term player for the team, making the trade confusing. Even though Mason had a lot of potential, the 49ers traded him because McCaffrey is healthy and ready to play next season. But 49ers fans are upset about the move.
That same money could of been used on mason over juice

Mason is gonna go off with the Vikings they will regret this trade and choice
So they gave up Jordan Mason and a 6th round pick to get a 5th and a 6th round pick. Man I don't know where this team going. Hell trade CMC and Kittle too

Jordan Mason is the same RB who was leading the league in rushing yards through 6 weeks before getting hurt. What a steal for the Vikings.
John Lynch and Paraag getting worked this offseason. https://t.co/T22Eq564vn
Don’t think I like trade for either team.

Vikings: uncertainty around whether or not Mason was just good in 9ers system since every 49ers RB looks good
49ers: hardly get anything and if CMC gets hurt again ur backup is Isaac Guerrero https://t.co/j2OfeL3nev
Why did the Vikings choose to acquire Jordan Mason?
Age is irrelevant to the Vikings, who like young players with promise. Mason is valuable at age 25, especially since they signed Aaron Jones and don’t want him to have to carry as much weight as he did last season.
Mason did really well in a similar 49ers setup that emphasizes zone runs and cutbacks. He’s definitely got the strength to take on gap schemes, which is something coach Kevin O’Connell has done in the past.
Now the Vikings have got two solid backs with him. This move gives Jones some backup after dealing with injuries last year and boosts an already solid offense featuring stars like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson.
And now he got great O-line and is still coached by a elite offensive mind, Jordan is gonna be great on the Vikings https://t.co/exK9dPyDA6

It also gives the Vikings flexibility for the draft—they’re not desperate for a running back but will take a shot if the right player falls to them.
