49ers Make Right Move by Trading Jordan Mason to the Vikings

The San Francisco 49ers made a calculated move by trading running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings, a decision that is already garnering attention across the NFL landscape.

Ian Rapoport from NFL Media says the 49ers are trading running back Jordan Mason to the Vikings. Mason will sign a two-year, $7 million contract, which can go up to $12 million. In exchange, the 49ers get a 2026 sixth-round draft pick and a swap of Day 3 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Mason had a strong 2024 season, stepping in for Christian McCaffrey when he was hurt. He rushed for 789 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games but had to prematurely end his season early due to an ankle injury.

Despite his excellent performance, the 49ers decided to trade him to make room for cap space and improve their draft picks with Brock Purdy’s upcoming contract extension and the possible extension for George Kittle. That’s why this trade benefited the franchise.

However, this trade will also benefit the 25-year-old running back, giving him a fresh start with the Vikings.

How does this trade unlock better opportunities for Jordan Mason?

Jordan Mason mostly played in place of Christian McCaffrey when McCaffrey was injured. The good news for the team is that McCaffrey is now back and ready for the upcoming season. This scenario would have limited Mason’s playing time on the 49ers.

But now in Vikings, however, he will serve as the backup to Aaron Jones, who is known for frequently getting injured. Mason’s new contract also gives him a big pay increase, with a salary of over $5 million per year.

Overall, the trade to the Vikings is excellent for Mason because he will get more playing time and a better salary.
