Sam Darnold has five seasons of experience playing for the Jets and Panthers, throwing for 11,767 yards and 61 touchdowns. The Jets selected Darnold with the third overall choice in the 2018 draft, and he struggled while starting 38 games for them before being dealt to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. In that season, Sam started 11 games before losing his job late on.
Darnold credited his progress from the previous season in part to spending a lot of time with defensive players while on injured reserve to gain a fresh viewpoint, even though he started the season on injured reserve and didn’t have the chance to play until late in the season after Mayfield was fired after going 2-8 as the starter.
