Premier League giants Manchester United secured a thrilling 3-0 victory over Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison on Sunday, marking their third consecutive league win since suffering a defeat in the Manchester derby against champions Manchester City.
The win injects a much-needed boost to Eric Ten Hag’s side as they prepare to face Galatasaray in a must-win midweek Champions League fixture to keep their Round of 16 hopes alive. Manchester United is reportedly considering former Chelsea striker Timo Werner as a potential solution to their attacking issues upfront.
Timo Werner on United’s radar for January transfer window
Manchester United’s Premier League win against Everton marked only the second occasion this season when they managed to score three goals. As a wake-up call, the club is in search of a clinical forward who can make a significant impact, especially since Marcus Rashford hasn’t found his form this season.
It was Alejandro Gancho who opened the scoreline for the Red Devils in the win with a spectacular overhead bicycle kick that left the home fans silent. However, the club still aims to add an experienced forward to strengthen the frontline. Reportedly, the former Chelsea striker Timo Werner is on the radar for a January move to Old Trafford by Manchester United.
The German international returned to Germany following a disappointing stint with the Blues to reunite with his side RB Leipzig in 2022. Despite making a good start to his second spell with Leipzig, the striker is currently unhappy with his situation at the Red Bull Arena due to irregular minutes on the field.
Last season, Werner bagged an impressive tally of 16 goals, but things have taken a downturn this term, with him managing only 370 minutes of game time and scoring just twice in all competitions. With his place in the Bundesliga side remaining uncertain, the striker might choose to move to Old Trafford or elsewhere.
Werner’s EPL stint disappoints with only 10 goals in 56 appearances
Chelsea splashed out $60 million to secure the services of former Stuttgart player Timo Werner in 2020 from RB Leipzig. The forward enjoyed a successful club season during which Chelsea won the Champions League, Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup. However, his individual performance failed to meet expectations, leading to a move back to Leipzig.
The 27-year-old had earned a reputation as a serial goal-scorer in the Bundesliga, emerging as the top forward in Germany before moving to London. During his tenure with Chelsea, he scored 10 goals in 56 league appearances. Overall, he contributed to 44 goals, comprising 23 goals and 21 assists, in a total of 89 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League side.
