WWE Payback was a highly successful Premium Live Event for the company, thanks to its exceptionally stacked match card. The anticipation grew even further when it was announced on Friday that John Cena would be hosting the event for the first time in his career.
The show opened with a steel cage match between Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus, which received acclaim. After this thrilling match, John Cena’s entrance music blared, and he emerged from the curtain. He expressed his appreciation for the match and then revealed to the crowd that he would serve as the special guest referee for the match between LA Knight and The Miz. However, his announcement was met with an interruption from The Miz.
John Cena receives warning from WWE talent
After their victory over Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, securing the Undisputed Tag-Team Titles, they were interviewed backstage by none other than John Cena, who continued his hosting duties. In a nod to The Miz’s advice, Cena sported a suit and a bowtie for the occasion.
Cena even playfully crouched to make Finn Balor appear taller than him, a common practice for backstage interviews, which added a humorous touch to the moment. Typically, backstage interviews are conducted by Cathy Kelley. Fans jokingly pointed out how Cena seemed to be stepping into her role.
It’s worth noting that Kelley might not have interviewed Finn Balor due to their past history, as they dated for a year before parting ways creating some interesting dynamics

Cena set for his longest WWE run of this decade
Cena was announced to be on SmackDown for the next 2 months, and the WWE Universe is excited to see what the creative team has in store for him. After the match in which LA Knight defeated The Miz with a BFT, there was some resentment from LA Knight towards Cena because he almost cost him the match. However, John Cena soon offered to shake his hand.
It seems like this was a way of showing the greatest of all time’s appreciation for LA Knight’s recent work, but there also appears to be a potential feud brewing between the two. It’s going to be interesting to see who John feuds with over the next few weeks, as he regularly appears on the blue brand.
When Cena returned to SmackDown on Friday, he mentioned that at 46 years old, this isn’t the last time the WWE Universe will see him, but it’s certainly one of his final runs, and we should cherish it.
Now with the writer’s strike going on and no sign of it ending, will John Cena stay with WWE after 2 months or not? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section.
