There’s a lot of history between John Cena and The Rock with both having a similar career trajectory and prospering careers in Hollywood away from the squared circle. They both are in the conversation for The Greatest of All Time debate.
This season in the wrestling calendar has been wild with The Rock opening and John Cena closing an episode of SmackDown and fans were surely in for a treat. Both of them had a long-awaited interaction backstage on the first SmackDown of TKO era.
John Cena reacts to Dwayne Johnson return
The Rock opened the show with Pat McAfee and Austin Theory in a segment that everyone loved. The People’s Champion met the Leader of Cenation which was a sight to behold and their first interaction in over 10 years.
Rocky was chatting with Pat McAfee before John Cena walked in and it was almost unreal to see both the superstars together on WWE television in 2023. Cena stared down The Rock but broke a smile and welcomed him home in a moment full of nostalgic undertones. The internet wrestling community was quick to point out the fact that both the superstars returned due to the ongoing Writer’s Strike for a quick payday.
Cena tweeted a welcome back post for The Rock who was last seen on WWE television in 2019. Both the men went one-on-one and headlined two straight WrestleManias. John Cena also publically and privately apologized to Dwayne Johnson for saying foul things towards Rocky moving to Hollywood.
The Rock revealed his injury against John Cena
Both the superstars went toe-to-toe against each other in a once-in-a-lifetime match at WrestleMania 28 and had a rematch at WrestleMania 29. The first encounter was won by The Rock but he put over John Cena next year. Fans were lucky to witness their generational clash.
The Rock recently revealed that he suffered an injury during his bout with Cena at WrestleMania 29. The match was supposed to go on for 45 minutes which could’ve further deteriorated the injury. Being the professional he is, Rocky finished the match giving John Cena the rub as he became the new WWE Undisputed Champion.
Being in the main event of WrestleMania adds a lot of pressure as it is a huge selling point for a premium live event. It takes a lot of trust from WWE to allow any matchup to head the main event, but it surely paid off as John Cena and Dwayne Johnson are now one of the two most recognizable personalities in the world.
Following The Rock’s return, there’s much to speculate about his future and whether he’ll have the dream match with his kin Roman Reigns after he revealed that the match was locked in for WrestleMania 39. One can only hope this wasn’t a one-time appearance.
Do you think we’ll see The Rock Vs. Roman Reigns on this WrestleMania or will Cody Rhodes finish the story? Feel free to discuss in the comments.
