Xavi Simons recreates memorable mascot photo during Borussia Monchengladbach’s loss to RB Leipzig

The Dutch international and former Barcelona youth product, Xavi Simons, is making a significant impact in the Bundesliga. The 20-year-old is currently on a loan deal at RB Leipzig from PSG.

Xavi Simons was once regarded as the brightest prospect to emerge from La Masia. In 2019, he departed from the Barca Academy and relocated to Paris to join the PSG Academy. The Ligue 1 champions recently exercised his buyback clause, bringing him back to Paris after a breakout season in the Dutch league with PSV Eindhoven. He is currently on loan at Leipzig until the next season.

In the summer of 2022, Simons returned to his home country as a free agent and signed a five-year deal to play for PSV Eindhoven. The attacking midfielder had a phenomenal breakout season, making a total of 48 appearances, during which he scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists.

This ultimately led the Parisians to trigger the buy-back clause in his contract and sign him to a four-year deal.

He joined Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on loan until the end of the summer in 2024 and has quickly become one of their key players, starting in every game of the season under the management of Marco Rose who holds the attacking midfielder in high regard.

Recently, Simons recreated a picture from 2016 with Gladbach’s mascot during Leipzig’s match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. This picture was originally taken during his time at the Barca Academy.

The 20-year-old will return to PSG next summer as his loan move to Leipzig does not include a permanent option. However, RB Leipzig is eager to explore an extension.

The Dutch midfielder has contributed to 7 goals in 7 appearances for the Red Bulls across all competitions, scoring 3 goals and providing 4 assists. The DFB-Pokal winners are considering extending his stay beyond next summer and are eager to discuss options with PSG.

RB Leipzig defeats Borussia Monchengladbach with late strike

Leipzig have suffered only one league defeat this season while maintaining their winning streak. Last weekend, the Red Bulls traveled to Borussia Park for their Matchday 5 fixture, where they faced Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The game seemed destined for a draw until Timo Werner came off the bench, providing the away side with a slender one-goal lead, which ultimately proved to be the only goal of the match, securing all three points.

RB Leipzig will commence their defense of the DFB-Pokal trophy with a midweek first-round fixture in the domestic cup, scheduled for Thursday.
