Rey Mysterio is one of the most popular wrestlers to come out of WWE. His courage and willingness to leave it all in the ring against bigger opponents has added to the star’s wide acclaim. WWE has been trying to find his replacement for years now with multiple Luchador stars joining the company over the years.
But they’ve been unsuccessful, and they’ve only managed to replace the void left by Rey Mysterio with, well, Rey Mysterio as he became the United States Champion. But there might be a succession plan in place by WWE.
Another luchador added to Rey Mysterio’s SmackDown brand
Dragon Lee has impressed the higher-ups in WWE after his impressive performance Vs. Dominik Mysterio 2 weeks ago on Monday Night Raw. He probably gave the NXT North American Champion the best match of his career and put on a wrestling clinic by showing a taste of what Lucha Libre is all about. After impressing the higher-ups, it was announced that he was called up to the main roster.
He’s now listed as a part of SmackDown’s roster and made his debut on the show last week where he ended up defeating Austin Theory via a quick roll-up. It’s going to be interesting to see two Luchadors on the same brand in Dragon Lee and United States Champion Rey Mysterio. Both the wrestlers have interacted on television before, with Rey also being in the corner of Dragon Lee while he battled against Rey’s son Dominik for the NXT North American Championship. Fans have been confident about Dragon Lee’s ability to be a successor to Rey and carry on the art of Lucha Libre.
Mysterio discusses retirement plan
Rey Mysterio has had an insane longevity in the squared circle, with the Legendary Luchador having competed in four different decades. From his initial run in WCW to being a superstar in both Attitude Era and the Ruthless Aggression era, he’s been successful in every phase of his career. But being 48 years old, Rey Mysterio recently discussed when he’ll hang up the boots and what’s in the future for the Hall of Famer.
In an interview with ComicBook, he stated, “I think more than anything it’s giving some time back to my wife. [She] has put her career and her time on the line to raise two kids to support me, and to allow me to pursue my dream of wrestling. In my life, I just want to be able to enjoy it and share it with her.” With his son Dominik Mysterio thriving in the WWE and being one of the most prominent heels on the roster, Rey can kick up his legs and relax as his legacy will be carried on by his son and in good hands too.
