Why did Lionel Messi’s second China trip of the year get cancelled? Examining the reason for Inter Miami’s last-minute decision

Argentine legend and 2022 World Cup winner Lionel Messi has fans all across the globe. The player’s admirers are found in every corner of the world, and he was supposed to fly to China to play for his fans there. Things were already not looking good and the trip has now been called off, and Messi will not be seen playing in China.

Lionel Messi’s run with Inter Miami has been impressive. The player has contributed significantly to David Beckham’s side and is expected to continue doing so. Despite his achievements at the new club, Leo could not secure the title of the best MLS newcomer and lost it to someone else.

Lionel Messi’s China trip called off

Lionel Messi has a vast fanbase around the world, and China is no exception. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has many fans there, and they were eagerly looking forward to watching their favorite player in action. Inter Miami was scheduled to play two games in China on November 5 and 8.

Regrettably, the trip has been canceled. Tour promoter NSN has informed everyone that the tour was called off as a mark of respect for Chinese officials following the recent passing of the country’s former second-ranking leader, Li Keqiang.

Inter Miami issued an official statement telling the fans that the trip has been cancelled due to ‘unforeseen circumstances. “The tour promoter, NSN, has informed Inter Miami CF of the cancellation of its China Tour due to unforeseen circumstances in China,” read Inter Miami’s statement.

“Inter Miami’s ambition remains to expand its global reach by playing in front of incredible fans from across the globe; the club will continue to explore future opportunities with NSN to achieve this goal,” they added.

Messi finishes far behind MLS newcomer

After departing from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi made a move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami in the summer of 2023. The G.O.A.T. was warmly welcomed at his new club and was also handed the captain’s armband upon his arrival. Leo’s impact on his new team was evident as he scored multiple goals and played a crucial role in his club’s victory in their first-ever League Cup.

Despite Messi’s outstanding performance, he was unable to secure the MLS newcomer of the year award. The winger was outshone by Atlanta United’s new striker, Georgios Giakoumakis. The 28-year-old joined the club in February 2023 and has since made 30 appearances, finding the net 17 times. The Greek international received more votes than the G.O.A.T. himself, ultimately winning the award.

It is unfortunate that Lionel Messi’s fans in China will not be able to see the Argentine play live, but maybe they will get a chance to watch him next year.
