NFL Rumors: Chargers sack HC Brandon Staley, GM Tom Telesco following defeat to Raiders

Reeling from a season-shattering loss to the Raiders, the Chargers are undergoing a decisive change. The defeat in a historic game has ignited a firestorm of action, prompting a critical reassessment of the team’s course.

Roster reshaping is on the horizon, which is a necessary step to overcome the obstacles that have affected their campaign this season. This decisive move signifies the beginning of a new chapter, one where the Chargers rise from the ashes, reforged and ready to overcome.

Chargers fire Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco

The Chargers have fired Brandon Staley, head coach, and Tom Telesco, general manager. The firing followed one of the worst losses in franchise history—a 63-21 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders, leading to the Chargers dropping to 5-9 for the season.

Giff Smith, who serves as the outside linebackers coach, has been named the interim head coach. JoJo Wooden, who previously served as the director of player personnel, has taken on the position of interim general manager.

Dean Spanos, the owner of the Chargers, emphasized the importance of taking action for continuity and expressed his gratitude to the former coach and GM, highlighting that he was unwilling to take the risk of not doing so.

“I want to thank Tom and Brandon for their hard work, dedication and professionalism, and wish both them and their great families nothing but the best,” said the owner.

Spanos acknowledged the loyalty of the fan base, stating that decisions were made with the fans in mind, recognizing their enduring support, and expressing a commitment to providing them more.

“These decisions are never easy, nor are they something I take lightly – especially when you consider the number of people they impact. We are clearly not where we expect to be, however, and we need new vision.”

Despite achievements like consecutive winning seasons and playoff appearances, Staley was criticized for issues such as clock management, over-aggressiveness, and in-game decisions that cost the team wins.

The decision to fire Staley and Telesco mid-season marks the first in-season coaching move for the Chargers since 1998. Staley expressed his desire to remain in charge.

“I know what I’ve done here for three years, and I know what I’ve put into this. I know what we’re capable of. I know the type of coach that I am, and I believe in myself,” he said.

When asked about his future after the defeat, Staley said he wasn’t sure, but he still believed in himself as a coach and in his talents. However, the team made the decision to terminate his employment. Telesco, who has served as the general manager since 2013, led the team to three playoff appearances. However, he faced criticism due to an overall record of 86–95 and limited success, which ultimately resulted in his dismissal.

Chargers poor performances in NFL continue

The Los Angeles Chargers faced one of their worst franchise records against divisional rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders, resulting in a disappointing 63-21 loss. The team’s season was already challenging, particularly after quarterback Justin Herbert, the highest-paid NFL player, suffered a season-ending broken right index finger in the previous week’s loss to the Denver Broncos.

Following their loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12, Chargers coach Brandon Staley addressed concerns about his messaging not reaching the players. He emphasized that the team had not experienced a blowout.

The Chargers found themselves trailing 42-0 at halftime against the Las Vegas Raiders, and unfortunately, the team had not scored a touchdown since Week 12.

The Chargers were essentially eliminated from the playoffs, having a minimal chance according to ESPN‘s Football Power Index. The loss would impact their draft position, potentially securing a more favorable pick.

Staley faced significant pressure during the 2023 season, which was characterized by several close defeats, including five losses by a margin of three points or less.

Calls for Staley’s job started at the end of the previous season following a disappointing playoff collapse. Despite leading 27-0 in the first half, the Chargers experienced the third-largest playoff collapse in NFL history. The loss to the Las Vegas Raiders was a tipping point for the organization, resulting in Staley’s dismissal.

The team’s defensive performance has been a challenge, as they ranked 21st and 29th in points allowed per game over the past two years. Unfortunately, there was a further decline to 27th in 2023.

The decision to make significant changes, such as firing the coach and general manager, was prompted by high-profile losses, unmet expectations, and a track record of playoff disappointments. This decision demonstrates the team’s dedication to charting a new course.
