While everyone thought the Super League idea had gone obsolete, Florentino Perez tells us otherwise. After almost three years since the European Super League idea was put to bin, there are talks that a new and different kind of Super League beckons the world of football, and it is reported that enemies-turned-friends Real Madrid and Barcelona are the masterminds.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have had a lot of financial issues clashing with La Liga, and they hope to put an end to the struggles with a brand new vision for an old idea of the Super League. Despite attempts of La Liga controlling Barcelona from initiating another league with hopes of better financial backing, it seems to have failed.
How ‘European Super League’ can end Barcelona’s financial troubles?
Barcelona and Real Madrid, despite their longstanding rivalry, may find themselves with aligned interests as they anticipate the European Court of Justice’s ruling in their courtroom battle with UEFA. This ruling will determine the legality of the Super League and carry legal weight.
As the only two remaining founding clubs, Barcelona and Real Madrid are expected to take home a staggering €1 billion if the Super League verdict is ruled in their favor. This windfall would, in turn, result in Barcelona’s financial woes melting away, giving the Catalan club some much-needed financial stability.
Although the initiative failed initially, Super League president Florentino Perez is confident and has maintained his stand with Barcelona after devising a new and different plan.
Florentino Perez reportedly in talks with 50-60 clubs
There are only a few masterminds like Florentino Perez, be it in the transfer market or the political arena. While Perez rallies for a new league along with Joan Laporta, reports suggest that the Real Madrid President has contacted 50–60 clubs regarding an “open competition with 60 clubs” that would have a revised structure.
According to reports, it has been proposed that there would be three divisions that would essentially take on the roles of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League that are now in existence, respectively. The new structure will be enacted after the prospective approval of the competition and the judgment that UEFA holds an existing monopoly.
The whole situation leading to the outcome might be a bit lengthy, but Barcelona remain hopeful of a positive verdict that could put them back on their pedestal, as they will receive huge financial relief to pay off the debts and build the squad.
