Jermell Charlo, the unified light middleweight world champion, got himself into serious trouble. This time, Charlo is not making news for his loss against Canelo Alveraz, but for something very personal to him.
Charlo has a good record so far in his professional boxing career, where his last loss was one of the most fateful in his career as he also lost his belt before facing Canelo. After getting stripped of his super welterweight title, it was already a setback. Now, Jermell Charlo is facing some legal trouble that will surely have a big impact on his professional boxing career.
Jermell Charlo was arrested for assault.
Last weekend, boxing’s unified light middleweight champion in Texas was charged with misdemeanor assault, causing a serious injury to a family member. The Bend County Sheriff’s Office got the boxer arrested for his deed. Jermell Charlo, once showing his sportsmen confidence in beating the champion Canelo Alvarez in the ring, is now facing that phase of his career where instead of rings, he will be behind bars.
The 33-year-old was released on his bond on Monday, and the very next day his wife, Chyane Westbrook, filled out the restraining order and for divorce. According to ESPN, this is the second offense he has been accused of. Jermell Charlo was charged with felony domestic violence earlier, as he allegedly choked his girlfriend in 2018. Though the jury didn’t find him guilty, the offense was still on record.
Jermell Charlo brags about hitting a woman.
Charlo has got himself arrested, and this time, there’s solid proof against him. An audio clip was leaked where he was heard bragging about beating a woman and using foul language.
The audio clip is easily audible enough to understand how Charlo was trying to explain his act in it, where all the uncensored talks regarding the eye sockets of the women can be heard.
“I hit that b*tch like this,” Charlo says while making a sound meant to simulate his attack. “In the eye. I socked her in the eye. The big, swole purple thing came open. That b*tch called the cops on me. Like a woman. Like a regular woman.”
This arrest comes after two months of losing the fight with Canelo, where he was dominated by the champion. Charlo had only one loss recorded in his career stats before facing Alvarez, but after September 2023, the numbers changed. Now, after two months, one more highlight is getting written in his career profile.
His twin brother, a WBC middleweight champion with a similar name, Jermall Charlo, also faced legal arrest for the same kind of act in 2022.
