Why was Emile Smith-Rowe absent from Arsenal’s dominating West Ham match?

Arsenal clinically defeated West Ham United with a score line of 6-0 away from home on Sunday. A brace by Bukayo Saka and goals by William Saliba, Gabriel, Leandro Trossard, and Declan Rice led to the Gunner’s victory over West Ham.

Despite being currently plagued with injury problems, with Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Thomas Partey and Jorginho all absent from the squad, the Gunners displayed a dominating performance. The latest addition to this list is Emil Smith-Rowe, who was unexpectedly absent from the squad on Sunday.

Emile Smith-Rowe’s absence from Arsenal vs. West Ham explained

Just before the match between Arsenal and West Ham United, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed that Emil Smith-Rowe had been ruled out due to an injury. He said, “Emile turned his ankle in training so he’s not available and it was too early for Jesus to come back and his to recover and Jorginho has been struggling with playing 90 minutes this week.”

The Englishman once again seemed to be on an upward trajectory after starting in the win over Nottingham Forest, but suffered another setback that will keep him on the sidelines for a few games. According to Arsenal’s medical team, the injury is not very serious and he will be back soon.

Due to this, there were many changes to the Arsenal starting lineup. Jakub Kiwior replaced Zinchenko and Leandro Trossard was given a spot in place of Jorginho.

How much does Emile Smith-Rowe make a week?

Emile Smith-Rowe has been injury-prone his whole career, but there’s no doubt about his footballing ability. The midfielder made headlines with his prolific campaign during the 2021–22 season, where he scored 10 league goals and gave a couple of assists.

Smith-Rowe currently earns £40,000 per week and is one of the lowest earners in the Arsenal squad. Compared to Kai Havertz, who is the highest earner in the team with a £2,80,000 per week salary, that number is miniscule. Smith-Rowe’s contract will be valid throughout 2026.

The 23-year-old initially joined Arsenal with a salary of £15,000 per week in 2018, which was increased to £40,000 per week in 2021. The midfielder has not seen any rise in his salary and is probably the lowest earner in the Arsenal squad.

Being just 23 years old, Smith-Rowe still has time to become one of world’s top players. Will he be able to achieve that feat? Tell us what you think in the comments.
