Formula 1’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, scheduled for May 19, 2024, has been making headlines recently in the F1 community, mainly due to the 30th anniversary of the 1994 San Marino tragedy. The Emilia-Romagna GP is set to return to Formula 1 after being called off in the 2023 season.
Following Formula 1’s re-entry on Imola grounds, the question arises: “Why was the 2023 Emilia-Romagna GP canceled in the first place?”
Emilia-Romagna GP 2023: Why was it called off?
The 2023 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, which was scheduled to take place on May 21, 2023, was canceled by Formula 1 due to catastrophic floods in the Northern Italian region. The F1 authorities made this call for safety reasons and to prevent any extra responsibilities on the emergency services, after consulting with Italian politicians.
Briefing on this matter, F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali quoted: “it is such a tragedy to see what has happened to Imola and Emilia-Romagna, the town and region that I grew up in and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the flooding and the families and communities affected.”
Admiring the emergency services, he said, “I want to express my gratitude and admiration for the incredible emergency services who are working tirelessly to help those who need help and alleviate the situation—they are heroes and the whole of Italy is proud of them.”
Thousands of F1 fans were expected to be present on the Imola grounds for the practice sessions. This was already adding a lot of extra loads to the flood-affected region, where the electricity supply and network were seriously affected. In the end, the F1 authorities deemed it wise to call off the Grand Prix event to avoid unnecessary strain on Imola’s emergency services.
Emphasizing F1’s decision to call the GP off, Domenicali added, “The decision that has been taken is the right one for everyone in the local communities and the F1 family as we need to ensure safety and not create extra burden for the authorities while they deal with this very awful situation.”
In the aftermath of the flooding event, it appears that F1 made the right decision by canceling the Emilia-Romagna GP.
What did severe rains damage in drought-stricken northern Italy?
The 2023 devastating floods in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy will always be remembered as one of the most tragic events in the region’s history. The deadly rains in the drought-struck region killed at least eight people and forced the evacuation of thousands from the region.
In the province of Ravenna, a part of Northern Italy, about 14,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes as a safety precaution, as it was expected that the rivers could overflow into the town. Emergency helicopters rescued people from building tops while the floodwater rose higher into their homes.
In an official briefing, it was mentioned that an average of 200 millimeters (7.9 inches) of rainfall had piled up in 36 hours, with certain areas recording 500 millimeters (19.7 inches) during the same time.
In some areas, the dead floods had completely disrupted the electricity supplies and many families were running out of food. In the aftermath of the floods, the reported death toll rose to 14 people and homeless people were numbered in the thousands.
Formula 1 will return to Emilia-Romagna on May 19th in Round 6 of the 2024 F1 season.
