Rich Eisen claims Giants ‘absolutely done’ with $160M QB Daniel Jones for awful NFL 2023-24 season

The New York Giants faced backlash for diverting contract attention from running back Saquon Barkley to quarterback Daniel Jones. After a successful season in 2022, the team chose to secure the signal-caller with a blockbuster deal.

However, since his 2019 draft as the sixth overall pick, Jones has only completed one full season. The pattern persisted as he suffered a season-ending injury in 2023, leaving the Giants with a disappointing 6-11 record. A report now suggests that the team is fed up with their QB.

Giants reportedly have buyers remorse signing Daniel Jones

The Giants’ decision to sign Daniel Jones to a hefty $160 million contract just a year ago seemed like a commitment to their future. According to Rich Eisen, the Giants are ready to move on from Jones, viewing him as a mistake. Eisen said the team is done with him, citing “buyer’s remorse” as the prevailing sentiment, via Big Blue View.

“The Giants are absolutely done with Daniel Jones. Done. Might have to play him this year. But that ain’t it. And they feel that ain’t it. The words I heard at the Combine multiple times, two words were, buyer’s remorse.”

With a whopping $69.3 million dead cap hit for the 2024 NFL season, parting ways with the quarterback immediately seems financially impractical for the Giants. However, the contract does offer an escape hatch for the team next offseason with a more manageable dead cap charge.

The Giants initially declined his fifth-year option in 2022, but the quarterback delivered the best season of his career. It prompted the team to offer him a lucrative contract. However, his performance took a diminishing turn in the first five games of the 2023 season.

An injury to Tyrod Taylor thrust Daniel Jones back into the starting role, but his season was cut short by a torn ACL against the Las Vegas Raiders. He recorded only 909 passing yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions on 108 completions.

Will Russell Wilson replace Daniel Jones for Giants QB1?

Russell Wilson finds himself on the market after being cut by the Denver Broncos following a prolonged trade speculation. The quarterback, with ties to the Big Apple from his stint with the New York Yankees spring training squad, is now a potential candidate to replace Daniel Jones as the Giants’ starting quarterback.

Signing Wilson could be a low-risk, high-reward move for the Giants. The former Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro Bowler displayed a solid performance in 2023. He recorded 26 touchdowns and just eight interceptions, with a completion rate exceeding 66%.

The QB even paved the way for the Broncos to secure some big wins this past season. The Broncos fell short lately, and Sean Payton’s drama about benching him continued. However, the signal-caller’s impact on the squad within that short tenure was really laudable.

Wilson may not be the MVP-caliber quarterback of his prime, but he presents a great option for the Giants. Their playoff-caliber defense and young, talented receivers could benefit from his veteran leadership. With the upcoming NFL Draft’s sixth overall pick in hand, the veteran can serve as a valuable mentor if the Giants decide to draft a young quarterback.
