The Houston Texans tight end, Dalton Schulz, had spent five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before signing with the Texans last year. Now that he has departed the team and spent one season in the new franchise, the TE has started comparing the cultures of the two teams.
After leaving the Cowboys and entering the Texans, Schulz experienced a bit of a culture shock and now considers his former team’s culture like a zoo.
Dalton Schulz opens up about Cowboys
Dalton Schulz signed a one-year deal with the Texans in 2023. However, after playing one season, the TE has already signed a new three-year, $36 million contract with $23.5 million fully guaranteed earlier this week.
The TE made a bold statement about the Cowboys on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, stating that the team is run like a zoo and the focus is not on football.
“The focus is just football, you know what I mean?”
Dalton Schulz shared that when he shares his experiences with the Cowboys with his current teammates, they get shocked and find it unbelievable.
“I’m going back and telling some people about being around the Cowboys practice facility and game day and describing some of the interactions and stuff that you see on a day-to-day basis and it surprises a lot of people. They’re like, ‘Holy crap. That actually happens at a practice facility?’ You think it’s normal, and then you come to a place like this.”
The TE went on comparing the cowboys with a zoo where he felt like an animal.
“(Dallas is) literally a zoo, dude. There’s people tapping on the glass trying to get people’s attention while they’re doing power cleans or whatever. It’s different.”
Schultz explained that they had built the franchise like this because the owner of the team Jerry Jones liked it this way.
“That’s the brand that they’ve built, that’s what [owner] Jerry Jones likes, that’s the way that they run things and there’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t realize how many eyeballs and how much that can maybe distract in the locker room, just being in the facility until you go somewhere else and you’re like, ‘Holy crap, there’s none of that.’”
Dalton Schulz has spent five seasons with the team but after he moved to the Texans, he realized the stark difference and how brutal the culture of the Dallas Cowboys was.
The Houston Texans have also faced cultural issues in the past. However, since the team signed coach DeMeco Ryans, the team’s culture has undergone a major transformation and has become a better place at least for Dalton Schulz.

Dalton Schultz spent five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after being selected in the fourth round of the 2018 draft.
During his time with the Cowboys, Schultz established himself as a reliable target, recording 198 catches and 17 touchdowns in his last three years with the team (from 2019 to 2021).

In his first season with the Texans, Dalton Schulz made an impact, tallying 59 receptions for 635 yards and five touchdowns. He formed a strong connection with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, demonstrating his ability to adapt to a new team and quarterback.
He expressed satisfaction with the Texans’ organization and culture, despite initial concerns about leaving Dallas, and will now play for the team for the next three years.
