Recently, discussing the Broncos and Sean Payton’s 2024 NFL Draft options, an NFL veteran, Brian Baldinger, highlighted the same mistake of the coach emphasizing he won’t repeat it in the upcoming draft process.

Brian Baldinger, during a recent interview, outlined Sean Payton’s worst mistake which was rejecting Patrick Mahomes, who is one of the best QBs in the NFL.
He suggested that if Sean Payton had drafted Mahomes seven years ago, Payton might still be coaching in New Orleans, potentially with more Super Bowl victories.
“Sean Payton wouldn’t even be there if seven years ago he Drafted Patrick Mahomes, you know when he was sitting there at 11 before Kansas City went from 24 to 10 to get him. He would still be in New Orleans. They probably would have a couple more Super Bowls too.”
Brian then added that Payton is aware that passing on Mahomes is a decision that will always haunt him.
“So he knows that’s never gonna go away from Sean Payton.”
Brian stated that if Payton identifies a quarterback prospect in the upcoming Draft with Mahomes’ potential, he will take the necessary steps to secure that player.
“He is gonna do his best not to let something like that happen again. If he thinks one of these guys is anywhere where Mahomes is or if he feels like I can get what I believe is the best quarterback now.”
Sean Payton, known for his controversial comments, is no longer the coach of the Saints but is leading the Broncos now. Interestingly, his new team is also in the same position as the Saints were in 2017. They face a quarterback-focused draft with the 12th overall pick and there is a lot of pressure on Sean Payton to make the right choice this time around.
What options do Sean Payton, Broncos have in the 2024 NFL Draft?
It’s no secret that the Denver Broncos are in the rebuilding phase and are trying to fix their roster before the regular season starts. The team traded QB Russell Wilson and also made other trades and releases quite recently.
While the team is focusing on various aspects of their roster, the major focus remains on the QB position. The team has the No.12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft which can make it a little difficult for them to sign the best players.
The top five quarterbacks in this coming NFL Draft are Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr, and Bo Nix. All these QBs are highly talented and had exceptional collegiate careers.
As Russell Wilson has been released, the Broncos currently have Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci as the only quarterbacks on the roster. The team needs a talented QB, but the question is who would make the cut.
Multiple NFL teams have already shown interest in signing Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels. While the Broncos have the 12th pick, it remains to be see. If they can sign one of these talented QBs.
