Why AJ Griffin Walked Away From Basketball at Just 21

The NBA world was stunned when Hawks star AJ Griffin announced his early retirement. It’s rare for a rising player with so much potential to leave the game without explanation. Social media exploded with reactions, leaving fans confused. The mystery was finally revealed when the former first-round Rockets draft pick shared the reason behind his sudden decision.

AJ Griffin retired from basketball to focus on serving God after the Houston Rockets bought out his contract. In a YouTube video, the 21-year-old shared, “I’m not sure how long this video is going to be, but to bring it all down in a short summary: I gave up basketball to follow Jesus.”

He continued, “I know … that seems like a loss in the world’s eyes, but I just want to let you guys know that I’m super excited because I truly get to serve God with my full yes. I feel like letting go of basketball has allowed me to go into full-time ministry and truly serving the Lord with all my heart, with all my time, too, as well.”

AJ Griffin stopped playing basketball to spend more time and energy on God. He thinks that not playing basketball will help him focus more on his faith. In 2020, he began his spiritual journey when he gave his life to Christ. He felt that God had found him and led him on this path.

AJ Griffin’s Surprising Retirement at 21 Leaves Fans Perplexed

According to Shams Charania’s report last week, 21-year-old AJ Griffin of the Houston Rockets confirmed his retirement. However, the Rockets decided to buy out Griffin’s contract instead of paying him the $9 million he was due over the next two seasons. Before being moved, he was averaging 7.5 points per game with the Hawks.

Fans were saddened by the news, with @BReynolds200 writing, “Sad because he has the talent to be a rotational player.” While others were puzzled since no reason was given for his decision.
