When a renowned athlete receives a statue, it has been traditional for the memorial to not resemble the real person entirely. This results in a wave of memes and some criticism. It looks like Dwyane Wade’s statue is jumping on a similar trend. Following the awkward sculpture of football superstar Ronaldo, it appears that Wade’s statue could be the next to face opposition from the sports community.
On Oct. 27, Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade was honored with an 8-foot bronze statue at the Kaseya Center. The statue shows Wade in the “this is my house” pose, celebrating his double-overtime win against the Bulls in March 2009.
When the statue was first revealed, Wade looked excited in a video shared by Fox Sports. Wade exclaimed, “This is out of body, y’all,” as soon as he saw the statue. During his speech, he couldn’t believe it and asked, “Who is that guy?”
The statue was meant to celebrate Wade’s contributions to the team and the city, but many fans noticed it didn’t look quite right. They were confused because the face of the statue didn’t really look like the basketball star.
Fans react on Dwyane Wade’s Statue
Famous sculptors Omri Amrany and Oscar León created the statue. However, many people are questioning whether the statue resembles Wade. Because of this, fans began to share their criticisms of the statue on social media.
@NubianThinker tweeted, “The fact that the @MiamiHEAT commissioned this statue of its superstar Player that looks nothing like DWade and their front office approves it is wild. Wade himself could be seen shaking his head in disbelief at the unveiling. 🤣🤣😭😭🤣👀”
@itnw0628 commented, “Let’s just say the effort they put into Dwyane Wade’s statue is very questionable…….”
@CharlesRobinson said, “Why can’t we get statues of people…that look like the people they’re supposed to represent. Nobody sees Dwyane Wade here.”
@xthevideostorex tweeted, “Dwayne Wade statue looks like he had too much tossed salad and scrambled eggs.”
