Vinicius Jr’s Ballon d’Or Snub Brings Racism To Light Inside The Soccer Industry

Racism in football is a big issue. Whenever a Black player is favored to win the Ballon d’Or, new criteria seem to pop up. It often feels like black players have to work three times harder.

The recent snub of Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has reopened conversations about racism in soccer. Things abruptly changed just a day before the ceremony, even though he was almost certain to win the award.

Despite an amazing season where Vinicius helped Real Madrid win both La Liga and the Champions League, the Ballon d’Or went to Rodri from Manchester City. Vinicius’ snub led Real Madrid to boycott the ceremony, showing their anger over the selection process.

This situation has sparked discussions about racism in soccer and calls for better support for players who fight against discrimination. Vinicius’ management stated that his fight against racism may have influenced the decision to award him, indicating that the football world is not prepared to accept a player who challenges the system.

The 24-year-old Brazilian has faced racial abuse multiple times in Spain, leading to two convictions for racist insults in important cases. Vini was the only player who truly deserved the Ballon d’Or, but unfortunately lost it. Now, his experience is a hot topic in the soccer community.

Fans express concern over racism following Vinicius Jr’s Snub

Journalists in the top 100 FIFA-ranked countries vote to award the Ballon d’Or. However, political influences can affect the selection process, leading to Vinicius Jr’s snub. Eduardo Camavinga posted on X, saying, “FOOTBALL POLITICS X. My brother, you are the best player in the world and no award can say otherwise. Love you, my bro.”

The soccer community has also voiced concerns about football politics. One user tweeted, “Being black is always doing three times more than the others! Vinicius Jr, I’m not a fan of the player or Real, but you have to admit that with everything he’s been through, especially racism, if he doesn’t win the Ballon d’Or, it would be a big blow for him.”

Another user commented, “🛑 Racism in the world of football. Every time a black person is the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or, the white people create criteria. After SADIO MANE, VINICIUS JR has just been a victim.”

Yet, some have pointed out, “Okay, there is an element of racism, but Vinicius JR is clearly detestable and that clearly played a role.”
