Klay Thompson is off to a great start with the Dallas Mavericks this season. Even though his “Splash Brothers” days are over, he’s now teamed up with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving to make a strong trio.
Coach Jason Kidd says Klay’s doing so well because Doncic and Irving create lots of space for him to shoot. Klay even broke Stephen Curry’s three-point record, showing that this new trio is one to watch.
Klay Thompson made a big impact in his first game with the Mavericks against the Spurs on October 25. He set a team record by making six three-pointers and ended the game with 22 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Playing alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, who scored 43 points together, Klay’s strong start shows how good this new trio could be.
In a recent game against the Jazz, Klay set an NBA record by making 15 three-pointers in one game. Right now, he averages 19.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 45.5% from three-point range.
Playing with Doncic gives him more chances to score, and NBA analyst Andy Bailey even predicted Thompson could set a career-high three-point percentage this season, which would be a huge boost for the Mavericks’ Finals hopes.
NBA Coaches see big potential for Klay Thompson in Dallas
After the game against the Timberwolves, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd praised Klay Thompson, noting how he’s getting many clean, catch-and-shoot shots. Kidd said, “Right now he’s getting a lot of clean looks with the catch-and-shoot. Hopefully, throughout the season — 50 games in — and he’s still in the top-five. That means the quarterbacks are doing a great job and he’s getting a lot of space.”
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch was also impressed, saying Thompson has added more depth to the Mavericks’ offense. Finch called their game “multi-faceted” and said it’s “a full-time job” to guard Thompson.
He expressed, “With Dallas, they have an incredible pick-and-roll game.. they have the Kyrie-iso game and now they have the off-ball game… They can switch gears to go to different things. It’s another weapon and you just gotta try to stay attached to him, which is a full-time job.”
