AEW is WWE’s biggest competition in wrestling since WCW ended in 2001. However, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash believes 1992 WCW was a bigger threat to WWE than AEW is today. On his “Kliq This” podcast, Nash shared a conversation with a high-ranking WWE executive who agreed with his opinion.
AEW has made impressive progress in its first five years, defying expectations and growing its global reach. Still, it hasn’t come close to WWE’s dominance. WWE, with decades of history, remains the top wrestling company, making AEW an underdog since its start.
Back in 1992, WCW faced a similar challenge. Even though WCW was not as popular as WWE at the time, it still struggled with inconsistent show quality. There were standout stars like Sting and Brian Pillman, but also gimmicks that didn’t connect with fans.
On his podcast, Pro wrestling’s controversial figure shared, “I talked to a very, very high-up WWE person, yes [Sean Oliver asked if he meant executive], and I won’t divulge his name. But I said to him, ‘I actually think that WCW in ’92 was more of a threat to the WWE right now than AEW was, and he said, ‘F***, without a doubt.”
Nash’s point of view shows how wrestling has changed over time and how competitors are now. Although AEW is still finding its way, fans often think of the old competition between WWE and WCW.
