Puskas Award 2022: Richarlison, Dimitri Payet, Marcin Oleksy named as finalists for best goal of the year

FIFA announced the shortlist for the Puskas Award 2022 after goals from Brazilian’s Richarlison, France’s Dimitri Payet and Poland’s amputee footballer Marcin Oleksy earned the most votes.

A total of 11 goals were selected by FIFA for this year’s Puskas award and fans as well as the expert panelists were given a chance to participate via online voting through FIFA’s official website to pick their favorite.

The PuskĂĄs Award is an annual award presented by FIFA to the player who scores the ‘most beautiful’ goal of the year. It was established in 2009 and named after Ferenc PuskĂĄs, the former Hungarian footballer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.

The player whose goal is deemed to have the best combination of technique, power, speed, and surprise is given the trophy. It is open to goals scored in competitive matches at any level of professional or amateur football around the world, and the winner is selected by a panel of experts appointed by FIFA.

Polish amputee footballer Marcin Oleksy scored an amazing goal and got recognized for his unbelievable achievement after FIFA nominated it for the Puskas.

“My teammate Dawid [Novak] played the pass. When I saw him approaching the ball, I knew it was coming to me. I connected really cleanly. It was pure. I always wanted to score a beautiful goal. You could see how proud it made me after I scored. I stood up tall, I put my chest out. I was just so, so happy.”- Proud Oleksy said.

Dimitri Payet is always capable of scoring worldies as he showed on numerous occasions and the French and Marseille winger is happy with the selection of his goal to the prestigious award.

“I took the shot in a casual manner as if it was during training. I think this sense of relaxation made the movement fluid. I couldn’t have hit it better. It bounced before and it sat up perfectly for a right-footed shot. I enjoyed it because it’s a goal that people will remember and it’s a goal that mattered.”- Payet’s comment reads.

Richarlison took the greatest stage to score the screamer as Brazil needed some inspiration and the Tottenham number 9 produced it. He will be hoping to bag the award and if he does so, it will be the third time in a row for a Spurs player to clinch the reward after Eric Lamela and Son Heung Min collected the prize last two seasons.

“It was a very beautiful goal. I had scored one like that previously for Fluminense and a similar one for Everton. I had the chance to score a scissor-kick goal again and I think it was one of the most beautiful goals in my career because it was in the World Cup and in a game that was difficult for us.”- Richarlison is over the moon.

The accolade will be given on 27 February 2023 at an event that is formally known as the Paris Ceremony for FIFA Best Awards and the three nominees have every reason to be excited about it.
