The Mercedes driver put forward an admirable drive, gradually recovering his way back to P8 on the track, battling Alex Albon for P7 with a commendable pace. Unfortunately, Russell was ordered to retire his W14 15 laps before the chequered flag, with Mercedes citing the cause to be overheating brakes.

“I just went a bit wide into Turn 8. I knew I was going to hit the kerb, but I wasn’t expecting the sausage kerb to have such a violent response. Next thing, I’m in the air. When I landed, I lost the rear and I was in the wall. It all happened really quite suddenly,” explained George to the reporters after the race.

After the incident, Russell was observed deliberately distancing himself from the slipstream of other drivers on the straight, with the intention to cool down his brakes. However, this strategy did not yield the desired results, resulting in the 25-year-old walking away without any points this weekend.

The race concluded with both Ferrari drivers completing P4 and P5, followed by Red Bull driver, Sergio Perez on P6, after the Mexican’s disappointing 12th-place qualification on Saturday.

Alex Albon was named “Driver of the Day“, the 27-year-old achieved his best finish of the season finishing P7 for Williams Racing, after defending off McLaren driver, Lando Norris who produced some cut-throat overtakes. However, both McLaren drivers failed to attain any points finishing a disappointing P11 and P13.

In the end, the Canadian Grand Prix brought back the dynamic atmosphere of F1 after drivers proved they are ready to race after a refreshing break. Williams driver, Logan Sargeant was the only other retirement this weekend alongside George Russell, who sets sights on a better performance in Austria.
