Manchester United under Erik Ten Hag has made significant alterations to the squad. The club had announced in the first week of July that David de Gea had left the club for free at the end of his contract. The red devils have now completed the signing of Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan, reuniting him with his ex-manager Ten Hag.
David de Gea was an extremely talented shot-stopper and was the last player in the current squad to win the Premier League. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Atletico Madrid, it was an utter surprise to the loyal red devils’ fans that the Spanish number 1 did not get a farewell. De Gea is still to sign for a new club after his departure, but it is likely he will move to a top club with his talent.
Bayern Munich eyeing move for David de Gea
After his departure from Old Trafford, David de Gea is in search of a new club. The Spanish goalkeeper has been linked to a move to German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. The Bavarians lost their club captain via long-term injury in January, after which they signed Yan Sommer. The Swiss international is now linked with a move to Inter, to become Andre Onana’s replacement.
With the German goalkeeper unlikely to recover within time for the 2023/24 season, Bayern are ready to make De Gea a prospective target. Even if Neur returns, the club management has doubts as to whether their captain will be able to get back to his original best at the age of 37. David de Gea can be an apt replacement, having played at the highest level and guarded the posts well. However, it remains to be seen how stern Bayern’s interest will become after they finish discussions both internally as well as with the player.
David de Gea leaves Manchester United after contract expires
The 32-year-old was offered a new contract by Manchester United, with a hefty pay cut to decrease the pay disparity within the squad. The goalkeeper accepted the offered deal, but Manchester United continued to delay the signing of his contract. United then turned on the last moment and withdrew their offer and in turn offered a new contract with an even lesser wage. This led to David de Gea deciding to leave the club and become a free agent.
The player has been one of the better-performing United players, being adjudged as the best player at the club 4 times in his tenure. Now, David de Gea has been replaced by Andre Onana, who will need to adapt to the league and the pressure of being a Manchester United goalkeeper. It will be interesting to see how well the transition is.
