After his contract with PSG ended, Lionel Messi was expected to return to FC Barcelona, but the 2022 World Cup winner shocked everyone and joined David Beckham’s Inter Miami. His former teammate Jordi Alba also followed in his footsteps and joined the club in the summer of 2023. Another one of Leo’s Barcelona teammates, Sergio Busquets, left the club after fifteen years to reunite with his teammate once again.
It seems like Barcelona players are following the same trend as Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. Sergi Roberto could also be bidding farewell to his club after thirteen years to join David Beckham’s side. Reports claim that the MLS side will be targeting the Spaniard in the winter market of 2024. All that is left to see is whether the player will accept the offer or not.
What is Sergi Roberto’s contract with FC Barcelona
Sergi Roberto has been a one-club man throughout his career, but the title will soon be taken away from the 31-year-old as he will be getting out of the Barcelona jersey after being associated with the club for almost 13 years. Barcelona signed a one-year contract extension with the defender in 2023. The deal included a release clause worth 400 million euros with an option to extend the deal for an extra year.
Just like Lionel Messi, Sergi Roberto’s loyalty to his club is stronger than his love for money, as the player is currently one of the lowest-paid players for the Catalan giants. This will be Roberto’s last season at Barcelona, as the player’s services will no longer be needed after Joao Cancelo joined the club in the 2023 summer window.
There is still no confirmation about where the player will take his talents, but there is a high possibility that he will be reuniting with Lionel Messi once his contract with Barcelona expires.
