Ever since Winning his first amateur fight by knockout, Anthony Joshua has always been a promising boxer, getting hold of the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles early in his career. He is also a two-time unified heavyweight champion, having held the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles twice.
Joshua has a history of being surrounded by controversies as well. Once touted as a potential contender to face heavyweight legend, Tyson Fury, AJ lost a lot of his edge following consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk. However, now the Briton finally seems to be making a comeback.
Anthony Joshua warns Deontay Wilder
After his spectacular KO against Robert Helenius at London’s O2 Arena, AJ now seems to have averted his focus toward Deontay Wilder. Anthony and Deontay have shared a rivalry for a while with Wilder saying last year that Joshua supposedly ‘did everything’ to avoid fighting him in 2018.
Now that Joshua has finally made it back to the winning ways, he appears ready to face “The Bronze Bomber” in the ring. In a post-fight interview after his victory against Helenius, AJ said that he is “Focused on smashing his (Deontay Wilder’s) head in”. Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, has revealed that a virtual deal has already been finalized for the bout.
Anthony Joshua defeats Robert Helenius
The heavyweight bout between Robert Helenius and Anthony Joshua was one of the most anticipated fights of the season. AJ and Helenius have contrasting boxing styles. The British boxer boasts a lot of athleticism with a lethal jab and a killer right hand. The Finnish opponent on the other hand takes advantage of his superior reach and impressive punching power.
Fans were seen booing Anthony Joshua multiple times during the warmup fight. He was being criticized for his cautious performance. This made it apparent that AJ is rather consistently losing support since allegedly there were a lot of his own fans in the booing crowd.
It was anticipated that Robert would be using his repertoire of skills to disrupt Anthony’s rhythm since AJ’s a fighter who likes to set the rhythm of the fight in his own favor early on. For several rounds, Helenius managed to frustrate Joshua successfully up until the seventh round when Robert was clean KOed with a single powerful right hand and ended up needing an oxygen mask.
Deontay and Anthony will now likely face off against each other at around the tail end of this year in Saudi Arabia. The main event of the card was set to feature a unification bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, however, contract issues have put that match in jeopardy.
