Barcelona eyes Arsenal’s Jorginho for January transfer
Xavi guided the Blaugrana to the league title last season and is working to rebuild the team, aiming to restore Barcelona’s position as a dominant force in European football, reminiscent of his playing days when Barcelona was unbeatable. Despite a promising start this season, the Spanish giants haven’t yet performed up to their true potential as a squad.
As per the reports, FC Barcelona are targeting the Premier League star Italian midfielder Jorginho ahead of the January transfer window. The Catalans are dealing with injury crises and are thus looking to strengthen the squad.
Earlier in January this year, Jorginho moved to Arsenal from Chelsea until next summer 2024, the Italian led Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League in the 2020-21 season. However, in Mikel Arteta’s lineup, he is not a guaranteed starter as new joiners Declan Rice and Thomas Party are the two first choices ahead of him in the midfield.
FC Barcelona wants to convince the 31-year-old Italian with a tempting project and a significant role under Xavi in Spain. Jorginho is identified as a top target for Barca. Moreover, he has been solid for the Gunners so far and has started 6 games this season under Arteta. He recently played against Manchester City in their 1-0 victory at Etihad.
Jorginho is in the last year of his contract, but Arsenal does have the option to extend it for another year. However, it depends on whether he would accept the Spanish endeavor with FC Barcelona, which is also on the cards.
Barcelona signs two champs from Manchester City
FC Barcelona had already landed two big Premier League stars, Ilkay Gundogan, and Joao Cancelo. The German signed with the Catalans on a permanent deal, while the Portuguese full-back is on a season-long loan deal. Talks to make his move permanent at Camp Nou are in progress.
The treble-winning duo with Manchester City have been among the standout players for FC Barcelona playing a key role this season. In January they are identifying other potential signings to bolster their squad.
