Karim Benzema continued his great form when he scored the only goal of the game in the 2nd leg of their Champions League round of 16 ties against Liverpool. With this goal, he closes in on a record held by the Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
In the first leg of the tie, Liverpool scored 2 goals early in the first half. But then Real Madrid scored 5 goals unanswered to seal a famous victory at Anfield. That result effectively sealed the tie for Madrid.
In the 2nd leg, it was a close-run affair but Benzema scored the winner in the 78th minute to make the score 6-2 on aggregate for Madrid. Liverpool has been in poor form this season but by both teams’ standards, this was a very surprising scoreline.
Which Ronaldo record is Benzema chasing?
Ronaldo is the highest goalscorer in the history of Real Madrid, with a staggering 451 goals in 438 games. His goals helped the Spanish outfit to 2 league titles and 4 Champions League titles, which includes the time when they won 3 in a row.
Benzema has become Madrid’s main man since Ronaldo’s departure, leading the club with his goals and assists. He was so good that he even won the Balon d’Or in 2022. Benzema is hoping to close in on Ronaldo’s record. Benzema has been a part of the team that won 4 league titles and 5 Champions League.
Benzema even returned to the French setup after being dropped due to controversy with ex-teammate Mathieu Valbuena. He did not take part in France’s 2016 Euro and 2018 World Cup runs. But he came back and won the new UEFA Nations League. He played in the 2021 Euros but France crashed out in the first knockout match.
The Frenchman has 342 goals for the club since joining from boyhood club Lyon in 2009. He has 19 goals more than Raul, the legendary Spanish striker and the former captain of Real Madrid. Benzema has 19 goals and 5 assists in 28 games this season. Will Benzema break Ronaldo’s record? Will Benzema lead Madrid to another Champions League title this season?
