Carolina Panthers names Steve Wilks as interim head coach after Matt Rhule dismissal

The Panthers finally made the most anticipated decision to let third-year head coach Matt Rhule go on Monday. In Sunday’s 37-15 defeat to the 49ers, the Carolina Panthers fell to 1-4 on the season, lowering his NFL record to 11-27.

Now, the question might emerge who will be the next coach of the Carolina Panther?

It’s the first coaching change of the season in 2022. Following the dismissal of Rhule, the Panthers named defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach Steve Wilks as interim head coach for the rest of the season.

The endemic of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been given the responsibility of leading Carolina through its last 12 games before the 2023 NFL Draft. Wilks will be taking on the role of head coach again after having previously led the Cardinals for a single year.

Steve Wilks’ past record as a head coach

Wilks has had two seasons as a head coach, one of which was in the NFL. however, both teams had to witness unsuccessful campaigns.

To be precise, Savannah State was the first in 1999. Wilks did not return for a second season after leading the Tigers to a 5-6 record the previous year. After working as Rivera’s defensive assistant for many years, he was given the opportunity to lead the NFL’s Cardinals as their head coach in 2018.

He supervised Arizona’s 3-13 season, during which the team had the poorest scoring offense in the league (14.1 points per game) and the 26th-worst scoring defense (26.6 points per game).
