Manchester United’s star defensive midfielder, Casemiro made a surprising switch to the Premier League last season in 2022. The Brazilian left Real Madrid despite his immense success, having won the La Liga title and his fifth Champions League triumph in an incredible season.
Casemiro returned to the first eleven for the Red Devils after being sidelined in their last three fixtures due to injury. However, his comeback couldn’t inspire his side to reverse their disastrous run, as they suffered another humiliating defeat in the Carabao Cup. The Red Devils boss provided an update on the Brazilian’s injury woes.
Casemiro injury update
The Brazil international is among the highest-paid names at Old Trafford and his stature as a player puts him ahead in the list of top elite midfielders in the world. Casemiro is the most trusted name in Eric ten Hag’s squad and started the first 8 league games and 2 opening fixtures in the Champions League.
The former Real Madrid star suffered a blown ankle injury while on international duty earlier this month and subsequently missed three consecutive matches for Manchester United, being suspended in their 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen.
The 31-year-old failed to regain his fitness to feature in the Manchester derby against Manchester City as he remained sidelined in the humiliating 3-0 defeat at home on Sunday.
Casemiro marked his return to the starting line-up against the Magpies in the midweek clash, wearing the captain’s armband. He replaced Bruno Fernandes but was eventually taken off at half-time following a disappointing first half due to fresh injury woes.
In the post-match conference, the United boss revealed why Casemiro was subbed off at the interval. Ten Hag said, “He was injured. Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off.”
He added further, “I can’t give an answer; we have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday he is out,” providing an update on his availability in the upcoming fixture against Fulham.
Newcastle beat Manchester United in Carabao Cup
Eric ten Hag’s side made a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, following an embarrassing home defeat at the hands of Manchester City. Amid rumors that Manchester United are considering firing Erik ten Hag and speculations about replacing him with the former Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, this defeat came as insult to injury.
The Red Devils’ dreadful run continued as the 3-0 scoreline repeated itself, leading to their elimination from the domestic competition. They failed to defend their title after winning it last season, mounting pressure and raising questions about Eric ten Hag’s management.
