Catcher Jorge Alfaro to join Red Sox on Minor League deal

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to add a new face to their roster, signing catcher Jorge Alfaro to a Minor League deal. Alfaro, a former All-Star in 2016, is a veteran of six Major League seasons and is highly anticipated to provide the Red Sox with a valuable presence.

The Boston Red Sox have yet to officially confirm the arrangement, but sources have revealed that they will reportedly shell out two million dollars to acquire catcher Jorge Alfaro if he is called up to the Major League roster. This agreement also includes two optouts on June 1st and July 1st in the case that Alfaro has not been promoted to the big leagues by those dates.

Alfaro, 29, was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2010 and spent the last two seasons with the Miami Marlins. He’s a career .242 hitter with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs in parts of four major league seasons. The Red Sox are hoping that Alfaro can provide solid defense behind the plate and help the pitching staff. They are also looking for him to help with the bat by picking up some of the slack from the departure of Sandy Leon.

The Red Sox now have a solid catching core with Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki as the primary catchers and Alfaro as their third option. Alfaro has shown he can handle the workload, as he posted a .939 fielding percentage in 2019, the highest of his career.
