Islam Makhachev has called out the UFC number 1 lightweight contender Charles “Du Bronx” Oliveira to face him for the vacant lightweight title! Oliveira is getting an automatic shot at the vacant title since he was stripped of the belt due to missing weight ahead of UFC 274!
Islam Makhachev has been waiting for a shot at the lightweight title ever since his friend and teammate Khabib left the sport of MMA. But the belt has since changed hands and now resides in Brazil with Charles “Du Bronx” Oliveira, or it did until UFC 274!
Even though Charles beat Justin Gaethje convincingly during the main event, he did not walk away with the gold belt around his waist. Charles was stripped of the title right before the fight because he did not make championship weight! Now he is the number 1 contender with a guaranteed shot at the vacant strap. But one man can stop Charles’s dreams of regaining the “belt he never lost”.
The man in question is Islam Makhachev. Apparently, Charles is ducking him at the moment and not responding to any call-outs. The fight is bound to happen at some point in the near future but the UFC has not declared anything to the public.
Islam Makhachev is currently on a 10-fight win streak and should logically be in the title contention. But there have been questions about his lack of wins against high-ranked opponents due to a lot of them pulling out at the last minute. Most recently, Makhachev fought replacement fighter Bobby Green and destroyed him in the first round of the fight!
There is a possibility of a quick reply from Oliveira but that has yet to occur, It is looking like the rumors about Charles not wanting to fight Islam are true after all!
