Chelsea legend John Terry shocks EPL fans with unexpected Stamford Bridge return

After a season of underperformance and heartbreaks, Chelsea is looking to turn things around. The London club finished the season in twelfth position in the premier league, their worst in the best parts of three decades. The Chelsea fans were in shock when 42-year-old John Terry announced his homecoming to the club as a part of the academy.

It is fair to say that the London club has been busy in the ongoing transfer window, with the arrivals of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson while also seeing several players leave. The club’s hierarchy decided to recall the Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino back into the Premier League and lead their charge for the next season.

The former Chelsea captain is well respected among the club’s supporters due to his significant contributions to their success. In 2018, the English defender started his coaching career as an assistant manager under Dean Smith at Aston Villa.

How many times did John Terry captain Chelsea?

There is no denying the fact that John Terry is considered one of the best defenders that England has ever produced. In 1998, the Englishman made his debut for Chelsea as a late substitute during a league cup game against Aston Villa. During his 19-year stint at Stanford Bridge, the Chelsea legend played 717 matches for the Blues, scoring 67 goals and 27 assists.

In 2001, just days before his 21st birthday, the Englishman was given the captain’s armband for the first time and since then the versatile centre-back has captained the side more than 500 times, setting a club record. The England icon is the most decorated player in the club’s illustrious history winning 15 major titles with Chelsea. The 42-year-old defender also has 78 England caps on his name, scoring 6 goals for his nation.

The Englishman returned to Chelsea after his less than-a-month stint with Leicester City, who ended up getting relegated from the Premier League. Leicester City chose not to extend the 42-year-old’s contract. After an underwhelming season, it seems as though the club’s hierarchy is trying its best to restore the club to its former glory.
