Chad Henne, the backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs who recently announced his retirement after their Super Bowl victory, revealed on The Adam Schefter Podcast that Mahomes wears the exact same pair of red underwear for every NFL game as part of his game-day preparation.
Henne said of his former teammate, on the podcast episode, “He has a baseball background, so he has to have a certain thing each and every day. He comes in, he does his work. His notes are written out a certain way. Same pair of underwear, which probably not a lot of people know, on game day. He’s been wearing it since I’ve been part of it.”
During his appearance on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Chad Henne was asked by the host to elaborate on Patrick Mahomes’ underwear. Henne shared that the underwear is red and might be from either the Hanes or Lululemon brand.
According to Henne, Mahomes wears the same pair for every game and it has become a superstition and a good-luck charm for him.
Henne added, “They’re red. I’m not sure if they’re Hanes or if they’re Lululemon, but it’s one or two of those brands, and ever since he comes in the locker room — boom, it’s right there. I’ll be stretching, and as I said, you just glimpse up, and you’re like, ‘Damn, kid’s wearing them again.’ This definitely has to be a superstition and a good-luck charm, for sure.”
Aside from Mahomes’ preference for his lucky underwear, Henne also talked about the quarterback’s meticulous game-day preparation.
“His preparation is unbelievable, how he goes about it,” Henne added about Mahomes. “He knows exactly how many plays are in each section on [head coach] Andy Reid’s call sheet. If it’s off by one play, it’s going to be mentioned that week. He dives into it deeply, and it’s fun to watch each and every day.”
The Kansas City Chiefs emerged victorious with a score of 38-35 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and Mahomes was named the Most Valuable Player of the Super Bowl.
At a ceremony following the game, Patrick Mahomes was asked if he considered the Chiefs a “dynasty” after winning two Super Bowls in four seasons. Mahomes replied that he wouldn’t go so far as to call them a dynasty just yet, saying, “We’re not done yet!”
Mahomes’ outstanding performance in the season, which included leading the league in passing yards, passing touchdowns, offensive yards, and offensive TDs, earned him the title of 2022 regular season MVP.
