CM Punk made a return to WWE after a hiatus of over nine years, much to the excitement of wrestling fans, especially those in Chicago. While it’s not uncommon for fans to eagerly anticipate the return of their favorite former WWE stars, CM Punk’s comeback is generating a stir. Given that he was recently released from the AEW roster, fans had little reason to expect his return. But here he is, back in WWE.
CM Punk returns to WWE
During the buildup to Survivor Series in Chicago, WWE sent hints that Randy Orton may not be there for the WarGames event. Fan theories say CM Punk may take his position. After leaving the WWE in 2014, CM Punk surprised fans at the Allstate Arena by making a surprise nine-year comeback. Cult of Personality played, and Punk emerged to the excitement of his local supporters.
As the program came to a close, Punk stared down Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, Jey Uso, Randy Orton, and Seth Rollins while hugging his supporters. Punk hasn’t wrestled in public in three months since AEW All In: London, when he attempted to defend the AEW World Championship before being sacked after an altercation backstage.
Punk’s hometown location at the Survivor Series added fuel to the fire of fan speculation regarding his comeback. Punk’s unexpected comeback after the main event gave the crowd what they had been waiting for. The WWE’s Chief Creative Officer, Triple H addressed the media about CM Punk’s unexpected comeback.
He said, “It’s been a long time, and in some ways, it’s been a long time coming. You can say this about CM Punk, love him, hate him, positive, negative, whatever you want to say, people talk about him all the time.”
When did CM Punk last fight in WWE?
On November 25, over 10 years after leaving WWE in 2014, CM Punk returned to the WWE Survivor Series, and he shook the company. He left WWE because of scheduling conflicts and health reasons. Subsequently, he signed with the UFC and began his career in mixed martial arts.
During the 2014 Royal Rumble, Punk was on the verge of victory when Kane unexpectedly intervened, eliminating him and delivering a forceful slam onto the announce table, effectively marking the end of his WWE career. Punk suffered a concussion during the match, which unfortunately led to the end of his career in the WWE.
Following the Royal Rumble, Punk’s presence in WWE was no longer promoted, leading to his absence from RAW and SmackDown. While Vince McMahon may have stated that Punk was on leave, it is important to note that he was actually no longer employed by WWE. The wrestling superstar sustained an injury in May 2014 and unfortunately received notice of his dismissal from WWE on his wedding day in June.
