Josh Harris purchased the Washington Commanders last summer and the first thing he did after taking over ownership of the team was call Darrell Green. Therefore, the news that the Commanders want to retire Darrell Green’s jersey number came as no surprise.
The Commanders have decided to retire the No. 28 jersey of the Hall of Fame player, Darrell Green, during the 2024 season.
Darrell Green wore No. 28 and played 20 seasons in the NFL, all with Washington. Green expressed gratitude for this honor and shared that he is truly humbled.
“It means a ton to me. I never thought about this, never dreamed about it, never asked about it, whatever. But when it was spoken to me, it blew me away. It caught me. It touched something down on the inside of me that I didn’t know was there. So now I’m very humbled by this, but this is huge.”
The team informed Green of this honor while he was at the Commanders’ facility to film a public service announcement. He read his script but then the team asked him to read another line that mentioned the team retiring his jersey.
“It knocked me,” he said. “This stuff is just icing on top of icing on top of icing on top of icing on the cake.”
The Commanders, who are not on Jayden Daniel’s dream draft list will have a ceremony during one of the team’s home games to honor Darrell Green for his valuable contributions to the team.
