Conor McGregor takes down post following backed fighter Shauna Bannon’s UFC London defeat

Irish mixed martial artist Shauna Bannon made her UFC London debut on July 23, 2023, although she was left disappointed after losing to Brazilian competitor Bruna Brasil. Bannon, who had previously gone undefeated in five professional fights, had difficulty in the first two rounds. Despite displaying improvement in the third round, she was unable to secure a victory before the final bell.

One of Mama B’s biggest supporters was fellow Dubliner and well-known MMA fighter Conor McGregor. His vocal support for Bannon’s performance, however, backfired when he tweeted that she had won the bout, sparking outrage among fans and accusations of bias.

Bruna Brasil presented a difficult opponent for Bannon, who ultimately suffered a decision loss. During the bout, McGregor had already used Twitter to offer his analysis, tweeting “2-1 handy,” indicating his conviction that Bannon had won two rounds to one. His tweet, however, provoked debate and criticism from viewers and experts who disagreed with his evaluation.

Following the fight, it appears McGregor chose to delete the tweet in order to avoid further scrutiny and criticism. Although the Irish MMA star has long been active on social media, such responses can occasionally have unforeseen consequences. Despite the deletion, Notorious’s support for Bannon and other Irish competitors in the UFC is undeniable, and he remains a prominent figure in the sport.

McGregor sponsored the Irish fighter for UFC London

A longtime martial artist with experience in kickboxing and taekwondo, Bannon entered the UFC with a stellar 5-0 professional record, which included a noteworthy win against Minna Grusander, a two-time contender for the Invicta FC title. It was revealed that McGregor‘s businesses, Forged Stout and The Black Forge Inn, would be supporting her for the battle just days before she made her UFC debut.

During the event, Bannon fought Bruna Brasil in an intense bout; however, she fell short, losing to “The Special One” in a decision defeat at the O2 Arena. Despite losing, Notorious continued to be her supporter, organising a UFC London watch party at his Black Forge Inn in Dublin and posting on social media during the fight to express his opinions.

Mama B expressed her sincere gratitude for McGregor‘s assistance, saying that he had been motivating her before she joined the UFC and had sent her messages of congratulations following each victory. She also expressed her optimism for Irish competitors in the UFC, where there are already four on the roster and more on the way. Despite the everlasting support of Irish pioneers like McGregor and coach Paddy Holohan, she is still keen to make her mark in the organisation despite the unfavourable outcome of her UFC debut.
