David de Gea has been absent from his national team squad since 2020 and was not selected for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. De Gea has exclusively represented Atletico Madrid and Manchester United throughout his club football career, and currently, the goalkeeper is a free agent.
The 33-year-old recently concluded his 12-year tenure at Old Trafford after failing to reach an agreement for a new contract with United. Now Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo is actively pursuing the opportunity to bring his former Manchester United teammate to join Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Ronaldo and De Gea could reunite in Al Nassr
David de Gea recently departed from Manchester United after dedicating 12 years to the club. In 2011, the Spaniard was signed by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson as the successor to another club legend, the Dutchman Edwin van der Sar.
The shot-stopper kept an impressive 190 clean sheets, the most number in the club’s history, in a total of 545 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions. He also clinched the club’s Player of the Year award a remarkable four times and won the Premier League Golden Glove award twice. The Spaniard also secured titles such as the Premier League, UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, and two Carabao Cups during his time with the club.
De Gea left Manchester United after his contract ended this summer, as a fresh deal wasn’t proposed by the club. Since then, he hasn’t signed anywhere else.
Since Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival in Saudi Arabia, numerous other big names from European football have followed his footsteps to the Middle East. The large exodus of star players has moved to the Qatari and Saudi leagues from Europe.
And now, Ronaldo is actively persuading a move for De Gea to reunite at Al Nassr. However, the goalkeeper is reluctant to the idea of leaving Europe.
Seemingly, his new replacement Andre Onana faced severe criticism for his mistakes in a recent 4-3 away defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Clearly, parting with De Gea has not proved to be a boon for United either.
David de Gea contemplates retirement amid uncertain club offers
Following his exit, De Gea had several offers from the Qatar and Saudi-based clubs this summer, but the keeper refused, as his priority was Europe only. Reports emerged that De Gea could even be contemplating retirement.
European giants like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were also interested in the 33-year-old, though no formal offers were made by the clubs. As the clock keeps running, the veteran GK is still waiting for the right offer.
De Gea remains without a club this summer and he has not seemingly received any right offers from European clubs. A move to the Middle East, to join forces with Ronaldo in January, is now looking to be a feasible option.
