Things are getting from bad to worse for Manchester United as the pre-season tours are around the corner. With the club on sale for the best parts of seven months and with no communication from the owners, it is fair to say that the fans are letting their discontent known. With about two weeks into the transfer window, Erik Ten Hag still waits for some clarity on his goalkeeper David de Gea.
Ten Hag had a successful first stint with Manchester United by securing the third position in the Premier League and winning the EFL Cup. However, several reports suggest that the Dutchman was not impressed with his 32-year-old goalkeeper’s performances last season. The chaos of the transfer window just got heated up when reports started surfacing about the probable departure of Manchester United’s number 1 David de Gea. Will we ever see the Spaniard in Manchester United colors again? Let us find out!
What happened between David de Gea and Man Utd?
After a 12-year service to the red side of Manchester, it seems like David de Gea has already played his last game for the club. The 2022/23 Premier League golden glove winner was under immense scrutiny after an error-strewn season and costing his team in crunch matches not more so than the FA Cup final against Manchester City. The deficiency in the Spaniard’s ability to play out from the back and contribute to Erik Ten Hag’s possession-based style of play has forced Manchester United to look for other options.
Excl: David de Gea signed a new contract extension only for #MUFC to back out of the agreed proposal.
Initial offer would have seen drastic reduction to De Gea’s £375kpw salary. New proposal is even lower & yet to be signed.

Several reports suggest that the club had agreed on a contract renewal on lower terms with the 32-year-old goalkeeper only to back out of the agreed proposal. The club have put forth a new offer which is considered to be on even lower terms than the initial offer and is yet to be signed. With the players back for pre-season in about a week, there are still question marks on David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford.
Where should David de Gea go, if he leaves Man Utd?
Since joining the club, the Spaniard has made over 500 appearances and has a Premier League title, Europa League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Community Shield in his cabinet. Last season De Gea climbed up the table to become the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets for the club surpassing Peter Schmeichel.
With every passing day of David de Gea not signing the new contract proposed by the club, it seems more likely that he has his sights away from Old Trafford. Several reports were suggesting that many Saudi clubs have enquired about the goalkeeper’s stance. Well, there is no concrete information about David’s next destination as of yet but it’s worth considering the possibility of him joining a Saudi team next season.
David de Gea has been a steadfast servant of the club for 12 long years and this kind of ugly departure is the last thing which he deserved. With the likes of Robin Van Persie and Ander Herrera given similar kinds of send-offs in the past, it is not a surprise to see it happen once again. With all the reports suggesting the departure of the Spaniard, Erik Ten Hag has his sights to bring a goalkeeper to Old Trafford. Well now, the question arises can this kind of departure be deemed acceptable for a club legend? Let us know your thoughts!
