Washington’s NFL franchise, which is currently known as Commanders, had many controversies regarding its name. The team was known as Redskins till 2020, and then its name was changed to Commanders. It was decided to give it a temporary name for some time. Now that Daniel Synder has sold the team, rumors about changing the team’s name are again circulating.
Recently, the new minority stakeholder of the team talked about the team’s name change which has led fans to think that the team might go back to its previous name.
Petition to change Commanders name to Redskins cross 15k
Since the day John Harris bought the team, there were rumors that Washington’s Franchise might again get the name Redskins. There was a petition created by Daniel Fazzolare to name the team Redskins. Daniel shared that the reason why he created this petition is because he believes that the Redskins name represents the team’s legacy.
“The name ‘Redskins’ carries deep cultural, historical, and emotional significance, honoring the bravery, resilience, and warrior spirit associated with Native American culture. It was never intended as a derogatory or offensive term but as a symbol of respect and admiration,” Daniel said.
The Washington Commanders was founded in 1932 and was named Redskins in 1933. For a long time, the team was known by this name. So, the fans of the team have a deep connection with this name. The petition has already been signed by more than 15k people. It seems like fans are also eager to restore the team’s original name which represents its legacy.

Josh Harris led Commanders ownership teased name change
John Harris has bought the Washington Commanders franchise for $6.05 billion from Synder. Recently, a minority stakeholder of the team, Earvin “Magic” Johnson shared that the team’s name is under discussion, and they might make a decision soon.
“I think everything’s on the table, especially after this year,” Johnson said. “We’ll see where we are with the name, but I can’t say [for sure] right now.”
After this confirmation, fans are more excited about the name change of the Commanders. However, it’s unclear whether the team will be named Redskins again or will be given an entirely new name.
