The love story between the HC and his wife originated at a nightclub celebration for a UFL victory by McDaniel’s Sacramento Mountain Lions team in 2010. A few days ago, Al Michaels, a sports commentator, explained how HC Mike McDaniel met his wife. Michaels suggested McDaniel stole his wife from a player, citing an ultimatum to the player while dancing.
While Al Michaels shared this story as a joke, the NFL world brutally reacted to it and criticized the coach, who was already facing problems with the NFL owners for stealing other player’s girls.
Mike McDaniel, after staying quiet about the situation, finally decided to address it. He felt the story took an “ugly turn” and explained that the broadcast version lacked key details. McDaniel clarified that it was a joke, emphasizing the lighthearted nature of the situation.
“It was a cool, light hearted story that took a [ugly] turn,” the HC said.
He also acknowledged the core of the story was accurate but pointed out some distorted facts, including the perceived threat to the player being a jest.
“The skeleton of the story is correct, but there are a couple of important caveats.”
The coach also clarified that, at that time, his wife wasn’t the girlfriend of that player. The player also met her there.
“My wife was talking about me stealing people’s girl. The dude had met her for 45 seconds….It was a very unique scenario. It was a special place in our memories.”
Mike McDaniel felt the broadcast painted him negatively, clarifying that the interaction was light and part of the team celebration.
“I feel like I was painted out to be a D-bag,” McDaniel clarifies. “It wasn’t like that at all. It was nice and easy. We were celebrating as a team. I think Steve Baylark was well aware when I made that joke in jest it was more important to me than it was to him. And I’m pretty sure I was right. I have a family now.”
When asked if dance moves won Hemstalk over, McDaniel humorously stated, “Clearly. It wasn’t my physical disposition. I promise you that.”
