As the regular season winds down, many players face a decision: hit free agency and explore new opportunities with different teams, or re-sign with their current clubs and extend their contracts.
Cleveland Cavaliers’ star point guard, Donovan Mitchell, is nearing the end of his contract, sparking speculation among fans about his future. While some fans might envision him elsewhere, the team owner remains confident with Mitchell for some reason.
Dan Gilbert is “confident” extending Donovan Mitchell’s contract
Donovan Mitchell is set to become a free agent in 2025, a prospect that will surely have many teams contending for his talents. However, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is confident that Mitchell will choose to stay put and sign a contract extension with the franchise.
In an interview conducted by the Associated Press, Gilbert said, “We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of years about extending this contract, we think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he loves the city. He loves the situation in Cleveland because our players are very young and we’re just kind of putting the core together that he’s clearly the biggest part of.”
Even though Mitchell is eligible to sign a $149 million extension deal for 3 years, he has publicly announced that we will not exercise that right now. Even though he has left the door open, signing next year will get him a 4-year, $200 million extension.
When will Donovan Mitchell return to Cavs’ squad from injury?
In a report by Shams Charania, the 5x All-Star is set to make his return on Friday against the Philadelphia 76ers after missing 5 games due to a nasal fracture. Mitchell had suffered two injuries in March, and due to that, he didn’t appear in the last 12 games for his team.
Before the nasal injury, he suffered a bruised bone on his left knee. It’s his second season with the Cavs, and he has proven himself to be a valuable player for the wine and gold, as he averaged 27.8 points per game this season with 1.8 steals per game.
Mitchell’s return will be a valuable bonus for the Cavs’ postseason preparations.
