Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s switch from football to wrestling in 1995 is a fascinating story. His popularity exploded in 1997 when he became known as “The Rock,” alongside fellow star Stone Cold Steve Austin. Recently, he shared a surprising story about asking the company’s former chairman to double his salary compared to Stone Cold’s
In a recent interview with Patrick Bet-David, Dwayne Johnson shared that Stone Cold Steve Austin was the highest-paid superstar at the time. Wanting to earn like him, he approached Vince McMahon to ask for double of Stone Cold’s salary. In the segment, he recalled how he negotiated his first WWE contract for five years at $150,000.
He shared, “If you don’t mind me asking, what’s his guarantee?’ He said, ‘A million dollars.’ ‘Okay, I want two.’ Vince McMahon started laughing and instead asked me to go away and learn the business side of things, and then we’d have another talk over the deal.”
After two weeks, Johnson figured out the math and was ready to accept the same pay as Stone Cold Steve Austin. He told Vince McMahon, “I understand now. I’d like to match it at a million dollars, what Steve is getting.”
Vince generously offered him an extra half million. He thanked Vince and gave him a big hug. More than two decades have passed since then. Vince is no longer with the company, but The Rock has become “The Final Boss” and is ready to make history at WrestleMania 41.
Dwayne Johnson shares his bond with Vince McMahon
During the interview, Dwayne Johnson spoke highly of his friendship with Vince McMahon before revealing the narrative of his contract negotiations. He talked about how respect and hard work have helped them become close.
He recalled, “The relationship between Vince and I was a great relationship because it was based on my willingness to work for every dollar.”
Dwayne Johnson continued, “Our relationship revolved around our willingness to put in the work, and I have a tremendous, boundless respect for the business of pro wrestling, which is so deeply important to him.” That’s his life. That’s his world. It’s his blood”
