Former Barcelona and Spain center-back Gerard Pique has retired from professional football and it has only been a few months since. The divisive figure has been a frequent name in the headlines from that time period but not for many positive reasons.
Pique has been in the headlines due to the fallout in his relationship with former partner, the Colombian pop star, Shakira. The break up has been out in the public and full of drama, to say the least.
Shakira has claimed that Pique cheated on her saying that he “chose a Casio over a Rolex”. (On a side note: The brand Casio also hit out at the musician saying that Casio watches are examples of reliability and then went on to sponsor her ex’s football tournament, the King’s League.)
However, Pique is willing to waive the white flag and call a truce with Shakira and this is because of the effect it is having on their two children, Milan and Shasha.
Gerard Pique and Shakira’s history
The pair first met during the shooting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup theme song, Waka Waka, written by the Colombian herself. They claimed it was love at first sight and they got together during the World Cup. Pique called her “his lucky charm” as Spain went on to win the World Cup and also the subsequent Euros as well. They were together for almost 12 years.
In June 2022, the couple announced their split and asked everyone to respect their privacy. But they forgot to do it themselves as they both went on and made multiple public comments about each other.
Shakira released her first song in October 2022 after the split and it was seemingly about Pique as she talked about monotony in the song. Monotony is the act of remaining with one romantic partner, which Shakira seemingly claimed Pique failed to do. At the end of the video, she locks her heart away in a safe deposit box.
In January 2023, she released another song and this is where she appeared to make direct claims about Pique’s reported new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti. She plays on his girlfriend’s name when she sings “claramente” (clear) in the pre-chorus, drawing it out so it sounds like she’s saying “calara-mente.”
Elsewhere in the song, Shakira appears to reference the fact that Marti is 12 years younger than Piqué, singing: “I’m worth two 22-year-olds / You traded in a Ferrari for a Twingo / You traded in a Rolex for a Casio.”
Is Gerard Pique Willing to put it all behind?
However, despite seemingly getting to a point of no return, it seems that Pique is willing to move on and put everything behind for the sake of their children.
He said “I don’t feel like talking anymore. I just want my children to be okay,” referring to the fact that he does not want to make any more public jabs in order to protect their children. This is a rare sign of maturity from the former Manchester United center back but we shall have to see if he follows through on his words.
Is this the end of the very public war between Pique and Shakira? Leave your thoughts.
