Former Liverpool, FC Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez is reportedly on the verge of hanging up his boots. The 36-year-old Uruguayan striker, currently playing for Brazilian club Gremio, was keen on reuniting with his former teammate, seven times Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi; however, as things stand, his dreams won’t become a reality.
Suarez, who currently plays for Grêmio in Brazil, is reportedly pondering his future in football due to ‘constant pain’ in his knee. The 36-year-old, considered one of the greatest strikers of this generation, has made 25 appearances for Gremio this season.
Injury problems will deny a Messi-Suarez reunion
According to Marca, Suarez has informed the club he will be hanging his boots because of the stubborn knee injury. This new development all but quashes any possibility of Suarez reuniting with his long-time friend and former teammate, Lionel Messi.
With 11 goals and 8 assists in 25 games for Gremio, Suarez has demonstrated that he still has much to offer the Tricolor Gaucho. Some of them were screamers like this one:
Rumours suggest Luis Suarez is going to end his career due to knee pain. If true, his last professional goal would be this screamer for Grémio against rivals Internacional.pic.twitter.com/7pq3wrd7yY

Brazilian journalist German Garcia Grova reported: “Luis Suárez told the board of Gremio that he is retiring from football. It is due to intense pain in the knee.”
He went on to say that Gremio will take the unusual step of including an “anti-Inter Miami” clause in any settlement agreement. The Major League Soccer team, which is co-owned by David Beckham, has been linked to Suarez in the past. Messi has recently reached an agreement with Inter Miami, where he will be spending at least two years.
How many years did Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez play together?
Messi and Suarez played together for an impressive six years, from 2014 to 2020. During their time as teammates at FC Barcelona, Messi and Suarez formed a formidable attacking partnership that terrorized opposing defences and delighted fans around the world.
During their time together at FC Barcelona, they won four La Liga titles together in the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, and 2018-19 seasons, as well as four Copa del Rey titles in 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18. In the 2014-15 season, Messi and Suarez were pivotal in leading Barcelona to win the UEFA Champions League, completing a historic treble alongside Neymar Jr.
And not only that. They broke numerous goal-scoring records as a duo, including becoming the first pair to score 40 goals each in a single La Liga season (2015-16).
It will be really sad to see one of the greatest strikers of this generation go into premature retirement after succumbing to a knee injury. What do you think? Let me know in the comments section.
