The former head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bruce Arians previously held the view that Baker Mayfield was a better-starting quarterback than the rookies they selected with the highest picks this year, however, following his analysis of the last season of Tom Brady, he now acknowledges Mayfield as a better fit for the Buccs offense than the seven-time Super Bowl champion.
Arians served as Brady’s head coach in Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021, he later announced his resignation from the role and acknowledged that the quarterbacks’ return to the team had influenced his decision.
Bruce Arians weighs in on Baker Mayfield’s edge
In an interview with The National Football Show two weeks ago, Bruce expressed his satisfaction with the performances of two quarterbacks for the Bucs, Baker Mayfield, and Kyle Trask, and stated how he also liked their quarterback competition during practices.
The 28-year-old quarterback was added to the Bucs’ roster after Brady decided to retire from the NFL permanently, however, within a short period of time, Mayfield was able to catch the eye of Arian, who pulled Tom Terrific’s leg by saying the Bucs needed an offensive boost earlier and pointing out Brady’s timing.
“A little fire, I think we needed a little bit of fire on offense,” Arians said.

Even though there didn’t seem to be any misunderstanding or hostility between the 70-year-old and the California cool, the former Bucs HC was probably dissatisfied with Tom’s performance during his final season, making a strong statement about the quarterback’s deteriorating performance.
“Nobody is going to say that Brady was playing bad, but he was playing bad,” Arian said in his previous statement on Tom Terrific.
Arians threw a subtle jab at Tom Brady
The Buccaneers seem to have made a wise choice by bringing in Mayfield after their veteran quarterback retired, and he is currently competing with Trask for the starting job in Tampa Bay’s first season without their star quarterback.
While Baker is eager to have the chance to compete for Brady’s old job in Tampa Bay, Kyle believes that consistency will be crucial in his quest to win the starting job. Kyle is working to maintain his attention on the task at hand.
“You gotta go back and look at Kyle Trask [on May 23]; He had a great end of practice. So it’s a nice battle. So it’s a nice battle. You got two young guys who I think are extremely talented and they’re doing a great job,” he said.
Bruce, in the meantime, has grown to admire these two quarterbacks’ tenacity and diligence, though it appears that the former head coach is a bigger Mayfield supporter than Trask and interprets his acquisition of the former Browns player as a great opportunity to boost the Bucs offense.
“Baker has been there and done it, and has I think a little bit of an edge just because of that leadership and having been in the huddle with pro guys a lot,” Arians said. “But the guys really respect Kyle also. I love [Baker]. I think he just brings a charisma and a fire to your offense.”
With Tom Brady retired, there seems to be an opening for an NFL player to rise to the occasion and chase the GOAT status. With multiple candidates actively on the field already, let’s see how the football scenario evolves.
