Ex-Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho parts ways with Montpellier following training ground physical altercation with his head coach

Mamadou Sakho, the French international defender who had previously played for Premier League giants Liverpool and Crystal Palace, moved back to his home country France to join the French club Montpellier in 2021.

Sakho has mainly played for French and English clubs only, the Centre-back left his boyhood club Paris Saint Germain to play for Liverpool in 2013 after returning to France following a physical altercation with clubs have caused him to leave the club.

Mamadou Sakho leaves Montpellier

The former PSG defender, Sakho, was contracted with the Ligue 1 club Montpellier since 2021 after leaving Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace. He has made 49 appearances for the French side so far. Unfortunately, this season, the defender has only featured once as a substitute, playing only 6 minutes.

The 33-year-old remained on the bench in 5 matches and was not selected in 3 out of the overall 10 league matches this season. Following a recent physical brawl involving Sakho and the club’s head coach, Michel Der Zakarian, the player was suspended a few weeks ago, and now he has decided to leave the club.

After the contract termination, the player shared a post on social media announcing the development. He wrote, “Following the incident that took place last week at the training center, for which I decline all responsibility, I have decided to end my collaboration with Montpellier.”

This has resulted in the 33-year-old center-back being without a club. Sakho had also fallen off at Liverpool due to the lack of game time and was sent back from a pre-season tour in 2016. 

Why did Mamadou Sakho have altercation with manager?

Reportedly, Mamadou Sakho allegedly grabbed the collar of the Montpellier manager, who called him a crybaby following an argument over his lack of game time which eventually escalated into a full-fledged fight at the training session. The Montpellier players separated the two, after which the club suspended the defender.

The club gave out an official statement that said, “For ten days, a media frenzy has been created around the club around a ‘clash’ between Michel Der Zakarian and Mamadou Sakho. Contrary to what has been said and relayed, no precautionary dismissal has been taken against Mamadou Sakho.”

Montpellier has confirmed that both parties have parted ways by mutual agreement and decided to terminate the contract in the best interest of both parties.
