Ex-US Open champ Emma Raducanu defends Porsche, Dior deals amidst sponsorship backlash

Emma Raducanu emerged as a formidable tennis player in 2021, writing her name into the annals of tennis history. Raducanu became the first qualifier in the Open Era to win the prestigious US Open championship, putting her at the forefront of global attention. Her exceptional performance in the tournament, where she didn’t drop a single set, garnered immense attention for the young, multi-ethnic Bromley native.

Since then, she has seamlessly embraced the public eye, gracing magazine covers, walking red carpets at fashion events, and securing lucrative brand deals. However, her subsequent struggles with form and a series of injuries have fueled criticism regarding her sponsorship commitments, with some suggesting that she may be prioritizing her commercial ventures over her tennis career.

Emma Raducanu responds to critics over brand deals

‘With great power comes great responsibility’, said Uncle Ben from the Spider-Man movies. In Emma’s case, we could rephrase the quote as ‘with great success comes great responsibility’. In Emma’s case, the responsibility lies in not indulging excessively in the fame garnered from a single Grand Slam victory but in returning to the fundamentals to secure multiple Grand Slam wins and establish a lasting legacy.

After winning the US Open, Emma Raducanu secured brand deals with companies including Porsche, Dior, and British Airways. She subsequently entered partnerships with Tiffany & Co., Evian, and HSBC, further enhancing her impressive brand partnership portfolio.

The main focal point of the diatribes aimed at Emma is that she radically dipped in form from 2022 onwards, steadily declining in achievements and also struggling heavily with injuries. In fact, her 2023 season has been a no-show for Emma as she is recuperating from a wrist and ankle injury.

However, Emma Raducanu has hit back at her critics, saying that it is possible to think about the future while focusing on tennis.

“You don’t really have overnight to learn to deal with everything that comes your way, I think that takes time,” Raducanu said.

“And commercial deals are totally okay because you have to think ahead about your life after your career is over and I think that a lot of the successful athletes would’ve said, ‘I wish maybe when I was younger I did think ahead a little bit.’,” she added.

Raducanu drops hint at 15 more years in tennis

Emma Raducanu has declared unequivocally her unwavering commitment to a successful tennis career, affirming her firm belief in her ability to persevere and excel at the sport’s pinnacle for a remarkable 15 years.

This prodigious talent, who will turn 21 the following month, has already made a significant impression on the professional circuit regardless of her immaturity. Considering her relatively brief reign of only three years, she has managed to capture the attention of both fans and critics with her extraordinary skills and determination.

Also, she has encountered the trials and tribulations of numerous injuries, with her latest setback forcing her to take a hiatus from the sport for a staggering 8 months. As a result, she has now plummeted to the 280th position in the highly competitive WTA rankings.

During her interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Emma Raducanu displayed a keen awareness of her situation while maintaining a strong sense of optimism for her forthcoming season.

“I will be coming back with a lower ranking but I’m looking forward to starting again, resetting.”

“I still have new goals, new things I want to achieve but I’ve still got 15 years in my career so there is no rush. Throughout my career I’ve had setbacks. I take most of my inspiration from books, I read a lot, I read Chinese history about the different dynasties,” she said.

Emma also talked about her ambitions to represent Britain in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
