The Liverpool and Manchester United affair is never a dull one, as the two most decorated teams in the Premier League played out a very high voltage goalless draw that was full of end-to-end football. Jurgen Klopp will be unhappy with the result as the Reds expected to win, but Erik ten Hag would be pleased on the other hand, despite him predicting a win for his side.
Amidst the rivalry, there was an unfortunate instance of the Manchester United bus being attacked by Liverpool fans just before the match. Fans have called out such a behavior from the home fans and have started demanding points deduction at the expense of the Merseyside Reds. The club has, however, condemned the act.
Manchester United bus attacked by Liverpool fans
The Liverpool – Manchester United rivalry is one of the fiercest rivalries in football, and it showed after the game as footages of Liverpool fans being hostile towards the Manchester United vehicle have surfaced across the internet.
Social media platforms were rife with videos on Sunday that captured the act of a Liverpool fan tossing a glass bottle towards the Manchester United team bus right outside Anfield prior to the match. It appeared that a portion of a window on the upper deck of the bus was shattered by the bottle.
Liverpool, right after getting notified about the act, condemned it with an official statement. The statement read, “Liverpool Football Club utterly condemns the actions that led to damage being caused to the Manchester United team bus during its arrival at Anfield this afternoon.”
The club further added, “Any individuals found guilty of this reprehensible behavior will also face the full force of the club’s sanction process” and assured that they were working with the Merseyside police to get hold of the culprits.
Fans want PL to punish Liverpool
Fans in social media have come out to protest against such behavior and want the Premier League to deduct points off the Reds’ tally. With fellow Merseyside neighbor Everton’s deduction of points, it seems that there has been a precedent set by the league officials.
This, however, is not the first time the Reds fans have been involved in such an act. United’s neighbors Manchester City have been on the receiving end of such hostility from the Scousers, most infamously during the quarterfinal of the 2018 UEFA Champions League, and in subsequent visits.
UEFA slapped a €20,000 fine on Liverpool for that incident, and it will be interesting to see what the Premier League have for them in their bag.
Do you think such behavior from any outsider should give the team a points deduction? Give us your opinion in the comments.
